Director

Joy Logan: With a masters in Parks, Recreation, Sports and Tourism Management from NC State University, I enjoy following my passion.  I love nature and teaching.  I could not picture myself doing anything I would love more.

The Whittemore Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS) strives to promote environmental education and to preserve the natural wonders of Tewksbury Township and the surrounding areas.

The 180-acre sanctuary was bequeathed to Tewksbury Township by Helen A. Whittemore. The facility includes The Roving Nature Center and 11 miles of trails for hiking, dog walking and horseback riding. Trails traverse mainly wooded areas with wetlands, ravines and hilly terrain. The sanctuary also serves as the perfect stage for birders and nature lovers to view local avian species and other wildlife.

The Whittemore Wildlife Sanctuary is open to the public Monday –Sunday during daylight hours. Please respect nature and take all trash and dog waste back out with you.

Programs offered at the Sanctuary include but are not limited to: summer nature day camps, maple sugaring, year-round public programs, in-school programs and school field trips, children's garden quilt, birthday parties and scouting programs. Contact Us to schedule your trip, party or program!

The Whittemore Wildlife Sanctuary is managed by The Friends of Whittemore, a volunteer board  and members devoted to the promotion of wildlife education. The Friends of Whittemore T/A The Roving Nature Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The funding for the Sanctuary comes from program revenue, donations, fundraisers and grants.

The Board endeavors to stimulate awareness and understanding of the total environment- natural, altered, human and historic - among people of all ages to develop a sense of responsibility for the care and wise use of our natural resources.

Instructors

I am a sneaky person who has fun with kids all day and forces them to learn about the environment without them even knowing it. I believe hands on is the best way to learn and I am not afraid to get dirty.

Board Members

Friends of Whittemore Board: I volunteer my time and energy into promoting and supporting the Roving Nature Center and its mission. I believe we create the next set of good stewards of the environment.

Volunteer

I volunteer my time once, twice, or multiple times on a regular basis.  I mulch or trim the trails, I assist in summer camp or at events, I help make wreaths, or I complete a scout project benefiting the sanctuary and center.

Members

I am a Friends of Whittemore Member.  I may have children who participate in programs, walk my dog on the trails everyday, or just feel that by being a member I am helping preserve a great natural beauty in my community.
